Russian Platinum delays launch of Kyrgyz plant over riots

MOSCOW, Oct 6 (PRIME) -- Kyrgyz gold producer Alyans Altyn, part of Russian Platinum group of companies, will delay the launch of a gold plant at the Jerooy deposit indefinitely due to the riots that started in the country after parliamentary elections, a spokesperson for Russian Platinum told PRIME on Tuesday.

Previously, Alyans altyn said it suspended works on the deposit due to unsanctioned entry of trespassers.

“The amount of damage is still unclear, it will be calculated after everything has calmed down,” the spokesperson said, confirming local media reports that the trespassers robbed a warehouse at the field, started a fire there, and beat CEO of Alyans Altyn.

The gold plant at the Jerooy field is one of Russia’s largest investment projects in Kyrgyzstan. The company has invested U.S. $384.2 million in the project out of a planned total investment of $600 million. Under the project’s design documentation, production will amount to 58.6 tonnes of gold from an open pit at the field and 29.7 tonnes of gold produced from an underground well.
